How to Choose the Ideal Nest Box for Exotic Birds
Choosing the right nest box helps create a safer, more comfortable environment that is better suited to your birds' breeding needs.
The size, shape, entrance position and construction type should all be chosen according to the species and the available space in the cage or aviary.

Every species has different requirements. A nest box that is too small, difficult to access or poorly suited to the bird may cause discomfort and interfere with its natural nesting behaviour.
A good nest box should provide safety, comfort, easy cleaning and enough space for the bird.
1. The Right Size
The nest box should be selected according to the size of the bird. Exotic birds, canaries and budgies do not require the same amount of internal space.
2. Inspection Door
An inspection door makes cleaning, monitoring and maintenance easier, so it is important to choose the most practical opening position.
3. Durable Material
Wood provides a natural and comfortable environment while offering excellent durability for regular use.
The Size of the Nest Box Should Match the Species
Small birds such as exotic finches, Java sparrows, Gouldian finches and canaries should use more compact nest boxes. Larger species, including budgies, English budgies and cockatiels, require models with greater internal capacity.
The choice of nest box should always take into account the bird's behaviour, the available space, and easy access for cleaning and routine checks.
Horizontal or Vertical Nest Boxes?
Horizontal nest boxes are widely used for species that benefit from a longer internal area. Vertical nest boxes provide a greater sense of depth and protection, making them a popular choice for many pet bird species.
The Position of the Inspection Door Also Matters
The position of the inspection door should be chosen according to where the nest box will be installed. In some cages, a top-opening inspection door is more practical, while in others a side, rear or drawer-style opening makes maintenance much easier.
