Nest Boxes for Wild Birds: How to Choose and Where to Install Them

Nest boxes can provide wild birds with an additional place to nest, particularly in areas where suitable natural cavities are scarce.

In this guide, we explain the main points to consider when choosing a nest box and how to find a suitable place to install it.

Why can nest boxes be useful for wild birds?

Many bird species nest in cavities found in trees, buildings or other structures. However, not every area has enough natural cavities or cavities with suitable characteristics.

Installing a nest box can provide an additional nesting site. Species such as tits, sparrows, starlings and other cavity-nesting birds may use this type of structure, provided the box is suitable for their needs.

However, occupancy is neither guaranteed nor necessarily immediate. Some birds may quickly explore a new box, while others may take longer to use it. Its location, the birds present in the area and the availability of other nesting sites can all influence their choice.

How do you choose a nest box?

Start by considering the birds commonly found in your area or the type of bird the box has been designed for. Different species may seek nesting spaces with different shapes, dimensions and entrance types.

  • Shape and dimensions: should provide suitable space for the birds the box is intended for.
  • Entrance type: the shape and size of the opening influence which birds can use the box.
  • Birds in the area: observing which species appear most frequently can help you choose a more suitable model.

Important features of a good nest box

As well as shape and dimensions, a few simple features can help provide a more suitable nesting space.

1 Sturdy construction

Stability during use

The nest box should remain secure and withstand outdoor use, providing a stable space throughout the nesting period.

2 Protection from rain

A more sheltered interior

The design and installation location should help limit rainwater entering directly, particularly during periods of heavy rain.

3 Ventilation

Suitable airflow

The box should allow adequate airflow while still providing a sheltered space for birds.

Where should you install a nest box?

The location can be just as important as choosing the right box. The aim is to find a stable, relatively quiet spot that is sheltered from the harshest weather conditions.

Trees

Tree trunks can provide a suitable support. The box should be securely fixed, and the entrance should remain clear enough for birds to approach and leave.

Walls

Some boxes can also be installed on the walls of houses, sheds or other buildings, provided the surface is stable and the location is suitable for birds to use.

Other outdoor structures

A garden, plot of land or other outdoor space may offer suitable supports. The most important considerations are stability, safety and unobstructed access to the entrance.

A quiet, sheltered spot

Where possible, avoid busy areas and locations that are overly exposed to strong sunlight, direct rain or prevailing winds.

How should you fix a nest box in place?

There is no single fixing method suitable for every situation. The method you use will depend on the support, shape and weight of the box.

  • Fix the box securely and firmly in place.
  • Avoid positions where it could move excessively.
  • Keep the entrance clear and accessible.
  • Use a fixing method suitable for the type of support.
If you install several nest boxes: some birds are territorial during the breeding season. For this reason, when boxes are intended for territorial species, it is better to avoid placing too many similar models in the same spot.

Is a perch needed beside the entrance?

Many nest boxes do not need an additional external perch beside the entrance. Birds that use this type of box can normally land and enter without one.

What matters most is having a suitable entrance and keeping the area immediately in front of it sufficiently clear for easy access.

Important precautions

Avoid installing the box somewhere overly exposed to intense sunlight, direct rain or strong winds. It should remain stable, with a clear entrance.

When the box is occupied, avoid opening, moving or unnecessarily disturbing it during nesting. Observing from a distance allows you to follow the birds’ activity without repeatedly interfering with their chosen site.

Maintenance and cleaning

Over time, nesting materials and other debris may accumulate inside. Maintenance should only be carried out once you are certain the box is no longer in use.

Before carrying out any work, you should also comply with the wildlife protection regulations applicable in the country or region where the box is installed.
